Marissa Meyer, BSN '15

Marissa MeyerMarisa Meyer was no stranger to the world of healthcare.

Having worked in the marketing area of her local hospital for nearly 14 years, Meyer knew she needed a clinical background to truly advance in her career. With this, Meyer found herself enrolled in Thomas Edison’s Accelerated 2nd Degree BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) Program. She quickly realized with earning the clinical experience she yearned for, she would be able to diversify her career options and open new doors for herself within the healthcare arena.

Since Meyer already held a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Monmouth University, this left her with limited options when it came to funding her education. Her eligibility for many federal loan programs, including Pell grants, was eliminated because she already possessed an undergraduate degree.

Support Thomas Edison State UniversityBecause of the philanthropy of Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and the Helene Fuld Health Trust, Meyer was selected and awarded scholarships from both organizations to assist in funding and advancing her education.

“Receiving scholarships from both Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and the Helene Fuld Health Trust provided me with so much relief,” Meyer began. “Their generosity allowed me to fund my education and focus on my studies without constant financial stress. Until I received these scholarships, I never before realized the value and importance they hold.”

Meyer saw these scholarship awards as more than just monetary rewards, but as a belief and reaffirmation in her ability to pursue her dreams.

“These organizations invested their funds not only in my education, but in me,” she explained. “They invested in my ability to be a nurse and gave me the encouragement and push I needed to complete my BSN.”

Since graduating in 2015, Meyer has since been working as a staff nurse on the medical surgical telemetry unit at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Pomona, N.J. She intends to pursue a master’s degree at the University in the future.
